THE SITUATION.

WHAT IS THE WORLD INSTITUTE OF NATURAL HEALTH SCIENCES?

WHAT YOU CAN AND SHOULD DO ABOUT THIS SITUATION.

The Situation: European legislation, backed by well funded vested interests, is set to undermine many of the beneficial food supplements, amino acids, minerals, herbs and traditional medicines that we normally take for granted.

Worse yet, the CODEX ALIMENTARIUS COMMISSION (CODEX), is seeking to adopt these unnecessary and restrictive pieces of European law and apply them worldwide in their campaign for Food Safety and “Trade Harmonization.” The WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION (WTO) will then act as the enforcement branch for all member nations ensuring that no member nation will have a trade advantage over another.

Dispite falsely reassuring opinions issued by a number of industry associations to thier U.S. and non-European members, domestic manufacturing, sales and distribution will also have to comply to these severly restrictive (European-based) new laws regarding natural health products. This is primarily due to existing International trade agreements including the GENERAL AGREEMENT ON TARIFFS AND TRADE (GATT) and the World Trade Organization agreement (WTO).

This means that even non-European countries will eventually have to conform to the very harsh EU laws and the CODEX guidelines and standards that align with them as regards a much shorter list of allowable vitamin substances, radically reduced allowable dosage levels and even what can be said, promoted or advertised concerning their physiological or mental benefits and that’s not all.

This will continue to adversely affect the Natural Health Industry as a whole including vitamin and herbal remedy manufacturers, distributors and resellers, health food stores, nutritionists and natural health practitioners and most importantly, the consumers they serve.

• Many currently available vitamins and mineral forms will be eliminated completely including, but not limited to; 23 different food forms of Calcium, 21 food forms of Iron, 30 different forms of Magnesium, 21 different forms of Potassium, 15 different forms of amino acids, almost the entire spectrum of Vitamin E, and many others.

• Maximum permitted dosage levels will be drastically reduced to RDA or "placebo" therapeutic levels.

• Herbal ingredients will be severely restricted.

• Traditional medicines will also be restricted or eliminated completely.

• Information on natural products will be totally censored.

These derogations prevent any ban on derogated ingredients from 1 August 2005, up until either the expiry of the derogation period on 31 December 2009, or final rejection by the European Food Safety Authority.

Based on the clarification offered by the European Court of Justice judgment, handed down also on 12 July, 2005, it will not be possible for the dossiers, or positive list applications, to be rejected unless the EFSA can show an ingredient (or dosage) to be unsafe following "the most reliable scientific data available and the most recent results of international research."

What is the World Institute of Natural Health Sciences?

The World Institute of Natural Health Sciences is a non-profit, worldwide organization established to support and defend the natural and alternative health industries; their sciences, and the individual's right of access to them.

We fully support the individual's basic right to make their own educated decisions and their freedom of choice from all available treatments and therapies in order to maintain or re-establish a desirable and sustainable level of health and well-being.

Further, our purpose includes the collection and synthesizing of research, innovation and technical developments from the scientific community in the fields of nutrition, foods and food supplements, minerals and herbs.

In addition, our purpose includes all of the work necessary to codify and simplify these scientific reports in order to redirect them back into the community and public sectors for universal access and understanding.

We would also like to point out that the World Institute of Natural Health Sciences is not a trade association. It is a non-partisan, not-for-profit worldwide organization that works to help protect the leading edge of the natural products industry and its many beneficiaries, practitioners and especially consumers.

With your help, the World Institute of Natural Health Sciences will continue to work and support allied groups to achieve appropriate legislation to ensure the long-term future of existing and innovative nutrition, alternative and natural healthcare and their therapies.

The institute, fully established in 2005, consists of scientists, medical and nutritional practitioners, political scientists, researchers, communication specialists and able-bodied volunteers.

The Institute's programs and initiatives are of critical importance to innovative manufacturers, retailers and distributors, consumers and those practitioners who have come to rely upon innovative and complex food supplements and alternative health care practices.

The World Institute of Natural Health Sciences focuses all of its work at the core of the situation whether impacting the EU, the United States or the globe as with Codex Alimentarius' all too similar agenda.

Current activities include:

• Support and assistance in legal challenges to the entire series of legislative efforts that directly assault the natural health industries, consumer's right of access and their right of choice in health care and treatment.

• Expanding our public and media awareness campaigns to garner additional support.

• The successful implementation of a worldwide celebrity endorsement campaign in the media, promotions and documentaries for internet and television broadcasts.

• The translation of scientific research and technical breakthroughs in innovation and alternative health. This involves composing reports into digestible layman's terms in order to increase accessibility and understanding of scientific findings, technical reports and legislation concerning natural health, medical practices, drugs and drug manufacturing, food supplements, herbs, and innovative and alternative product development.

• The acquisition and utilization of professional and volunteer researchers to document local, regional, national and international legislation concerning natural health, medical practices, drugs and drug manufacturing, food supplements, herbs, and innovative and alternative product development.

• Wide public exposure of the vested interests, their methods and motivations influencing and driving this assault on the natural health industry, consumer's right of access and their free choice in health care and treatment.

7. We're investigating, documenting and promoting the vested interests, their motivations, activities and the significant funding used to influence legislators and legislation for corporate and personal gain.

8. We've launched a massive international "Public Awareness" Campaign to alert the media, legislators and consumers of the potential disaster to natural health products and services.
